Nothing to compare thee to. Old Globe’s Solstice Soirée is one of a kind
The Old Globe really knocked it out of the park on this one.
This weekend the theater hosted its Solstice Soirée, a beautiful celebration of theatre, food, music and community.
The crowd was filled with so many amazing San Diegans and the experience was so unique that I resisted the urge to hoist my camera for most of the night.
But I couldn’t leave without making one picture of the stunning immersive performance choreographed by Jesca Prudencio.
It’s one thing to bring together many of the city’s top chefs. It’s another to get a whole crew of San Diegans to dress to the nines in their finest summer attire. But it’s a whole different level to seamlessly weave in a Shakespearian theatrical performance with music reminiscent of the opening credits of Succession, costume design that is both modern and natural, and to find a cast so deft at being fully immersed in a crowd for hours on end.
When this crew wandered through Julep Venue, they were delightfully bold wallflowers. When they took the stage from its four entrances — resembling a round, but with a bit sharper edges — the whole audience stood at gleeful attention.
