10 photos that will always remind me of Summer 2024 in San Diego

Summer in San Diego never really ends, but it is technically coming to a close.

A lot of us locals would argue that this is when the real fun begins — after the temperatures get back to a steady 72 and sunny and the tourists leave town (tourists, you’re usually pretty chill in my book and are an integral part of our economy, so we mean no disrespect).

If I’ve been a little slow writing San Diego Love Letters, it’s because I’ve had one hell of an adventure building Uptown 11 Studios this summer. Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see new work and the addition of some great new partners. In the meantime, here are ten images that will always remind me of Summer 2024.

My oldest daughter, Ellis, and her sister, Greer, hang out at bica's one-year anniversary party inside an old Volkswagen Bus. These kids get to experience neighborhood vibes in a way that can't be replicated anywhere.

Volunteers make the bubbles fly at the Switchfoot Bro-Am, a sun-drenched fundraiser in North County that celebrated its 20th year.

Chefs from bica serve up a whole hog on the patio of Gilly's House of Cocktails to an incredibly receptive audience.

Fire in the hole. We've been lucky enough to spend time in a lot of dynamic kitchens, but there's something really exciting about being in the back of house for a Friday night service at Hayes Burger on Adams Avenue, where efficiency and quality collide.

Speaking of fire, it wouldn't be a San Diego summer without a beach bonfire on Fiesta Island. IYKYK.

The Old Globe's Solstice Soiree was such a special night of experiential theatre.

As the record spins on the turntable with Timeless tunes, a San Diego palm is reflected in the vinyl.

At Girl Scouts San Diego's camp, "Thumper" teaches the girls how to safely light a campfire.

My daughter Greer wears my sweater during a free movie in the park provided by the City of San Diego. Kids from SD know that when it drops below 70 degrees, its time to pull out the warm weather gear.

In the final days of summer, my oldest daughter learned to ride her bike. The training wheels are off.
