“A bright, bright, butterfly day” on Adams Avenue
Two weeks ago, we watched in awe as a new neighborhood mural — the “Kaleidoscope of Butterflies” — landed on Adams Avenue.
Friday, we got to see the mosaic take flight.
Kim Emerson, the artist behind the mosaic, gathered with a large group of supporters outside the Adams Recreation Center on Friday to dedicate the mural.
She was joined by a small army of young artists, students from Adams Elementary who had helped place tiles on one of the sections of the piece.
Kim thanked the massive crew of people involved in bringing the public art piece to life before the tiny hands that had placed the tiny tiles plucked a fluttering blue ribbon off the butterflies wings.
My daughter Ellis, one of the talented young artists, raced up to Kim and threw her arms around her. The crowd on Adams Avenue rejoiced and, in unison, sang along to the strum of an acoustic guitar, channelling the tune “I can see clearly now,” amended with the words “It’s gonna be a bright, bright, butterfly day.”
